Shipwright Denis Scully

Hello! My name is Denis Scully. I am a highly experienced Shipwright and Lofter. I come from Crosshaven, a small boatbuilding village in County Cork, Ireland. For 40 years I have travelled the world as a master craftsman. Now I am based in Florida in the USA.

I started off working on such boats and special projects as the Brendan Voyage for Tim Severin and Gypsy Moth V for Sir Francis Chichester as well as several Admirals’ Cup yachts.

Crosshaven Boatyard was one of the largest wooden boatyards in the British Isles and lies in the inner harbour of Cork harbour. Once every two years Crosshaven is host to the bi-annual Ford Cork Week which brings in many yachts from around the world. It is also home to the oldest yacht club in the world, the Royal Cork Yacht Club...

After a number of years at Crosshaven Boatyard, I decided to go further into Europe for more experience. I worked in such places as Holland, Germany, France and Belgium. After a number of years, my head foreman at Crosshaven Boatyard asked a number of us to return there to loft and build the last Admirals’ Cup boat for Mr. Denis Doyle.

Some years back, I decided to further the use of my skills by checking out the possibilities in the Fort Lauderdale area (I'm still here in Florida). I applied and was hired by Black Fin Yachts moving eventually on to Broward Marine. Through Broward I became familiar with a company called Teak Decking Systems where I worked for over 23 years before semi-retiring.

I now specialize in such things as caprails, toe and hand rails, transoms and repair work. I occasionally work freelance.
